John Henry Carless VC

The sailor commorated by the statue in front of the town library of Walsall is John Carless, a rammer who served with the Royal Navy in the 1914-18 war.

He was postumously awarded the Victoria Cross following his display of valour, dying at his post in battle on board H.M.S. Caledon in 1917.

There are streets named after him and the ship he served on in Walsall and Gosport. That Pompey and Walsall connection is not just about football.
