What time is this to wake?

Dawn chorus long gone

Fierce territorial challenges of first light settled for now

Only sparrows tussle and splutter at the feeder

A blue tit regardless, steals a tidbit, nips off

A nuthatch clings, tail sky up, chips away at the seeds through the wire

Until the arrival of a spotted woodpecker, redcap ablaze to see off its cream-chested cousin

Who will have to wait but a few moments

Before returning to perform trapeze artist tricks

As I brush the night sand from my eyes
