On Landing

Normandy beaches

Washed by young blood from afar

All colours and creeds

n.b. D Day, 6th June, 1944 – a moment to remember.

Omaha beach cemetery has 9,385 graves of US service men plus a Wall of the Missing inscribed with 1,557 names of soldiers whose bodies were never found.

The youthful ages, different religious symbols and variety of names recorded there, reminds us of the disparate origins of American people, who came together to help Europeans fight the oppression of the Nazis.

America still represents hope for a better world. The men and women taking part in the George Floyd demonstrations, in the USA and now around the planet, re-iterate that hope.
