On Sticks

Sunken path, Ilminster from which coppiced hazel is cut for bean frames.

Tendrils wrap, hold, reach

Climb taut twine, bridge hazel rods

Pink petals burst free

.

n.b. I built a frame from coppiced wood cut from the hedges aligning an ancient sunken path, a holloway. French beans, already planted, wound their plastic, green shoots around the cat’s cradle of inter-laced garden string, popped their flower cases, then grew in mysterious jumps to become slender, fresh legumes; crisp to the bite, sweet on the tongue.
