on sound

I couldn't hear you
there was too much background noise
spouting from my mouth

n.b. “Say something once, why say it again?” sang David Byrne with Talking Heads.

A young couple were arguing on the train yesterday, not loudly, nor demonstratively. “I don’t want an argument.” he said. “You’re not listening to me.” She said. He moved to another carriage.

It’s not always easy communicating important stuff

on gaslighting

I wrote to you
with my concerns and fears
for our collective future
(the children's too)
waited for your reply
I waited for you
to phone or call by
for a discussion
on how we might work it
through
I got your response
woven through my lines
explaining
you'd done everything
you could
I was grateful to be told
everything possible
was possible and was good
if everyone else does everything
that in your opinion they should

n.b. Are we employing the wrong people to run things? Why is it us not following their instructions, not them not listening?

Loving being back at work tbh; it’s a gas.

n.b. Continuing with the cricketing theme, communication between batters is either a strength or a weakness. It is about being in tune with your partner. As in cricket, as in life.

Here is a clip of a classic cricketing communication breakdown for your edification. Stick with it to the end to see the culprit’s body language. Oops!

Mixed Messages

You had me there

When you wrote our hands held each other

“like flower heads turned to the Sun”

You had me there

~

You had me there

When you called to ask

“Why aren’t you here?”

You had me there

~

You had me there

And there

And there

You had me, right there

On the Phone

If when used to talk

We move to typed messages

We risk turning deaf

.

n.b. Useful as texting is, there is beauty in the human voice that makes a phone-call something magical.

Misreading, mistyping, misunderstood, misinterpretation of text, with all the confusion and mixed up emotions that these might trigger, can be avoided by hearing the words spoken.

I am grateful for the gifts of hearing and speech while I possess them
