On The Breeze

Gentle draught carries

Scent and echoes from afar

Sea air and childhood

On Autumn VI

Butterfly, wings torn

Batted by splatter of rain

Spirals down with leaves.

On Autumn V

How bright dragonfly

Life sparkles in late summer

Passes too quickly

On Shingle

Rushing stones swept

By surging storm driven surf

Spit and hiss at Man

On The Beach

Relentless waves

Assault makeshift defences

Wash away resolve.

Nightmare I

She gallops through sleep

Creates turbulence of thought

Calm in her stable.

The Life of Reilly (I)

I last saw him

Wandering through the wire

Khaki cap askew

Jacket smart with brass buttons

Polished last night

As commanded

Flashing flirty smiles

At the mouths of Mausers.

A vicious frost lay

Kindly on the mud.

From beneath his weary boots I heard

The crunch of ice

“Jack!” I called

He turned, waved, grinned.

I was the last he saw.

First Light (i)

In the end of night

Sun leathered magnolia leaves

Resound to beats of rain

Set grass blades to shivery dance

Cracked soil swells, fills, closes quenched

Droplets pool in hollows

Shimmering sheets cover all

Border foliage floats

On the rising flood.

.

Earthworms

Souls from the very depths

Swollen, pale pink, choked

Join the engorged slugs

Adrift.

.

Hungry

Blackbirds wake

Throw yellow beaks open

To herald the dawn

Tides

Rocked by the moon

Gentle rhythms of the sea

Soothe the restless Earth.

On Autumn IV

Beneath icy blue

Kaleidoscope turns to red

Forewarns of Winter.
