Accidents of birth
Born beneath the lights
Not quite the Bow Bells
We can all agree
Special all the same
Islanders all three
Northward the first went
As far as you can go
Beside the German Sea
As that sea was in fact once known
He played a lot in red and white
For Sunderland AFC
The second went to the East
A Viking port of old
He became a Champion
Renown for all his goals
Twice he played for England
Although that’s not often told
The third was found in Landport
He left because it was time
To stretch his legs and find out
What lies beyond the island’s shingled shoreline
In Derby and its county
He found another life

n.b. When a youngster from the local area makes it through to play for the city football club, the fans take them to their hearts. When they leave, for whatever reason, they leave with our blessings for a better life in the hope they will one day bring back what they have learned on their return, or at least not forget where they sprang from.
Three blessed examples, Kevin Ball, Ray Crawford, Darryl Powell.
n.n.b. NaPoWriMo 2024 Day 5 prompt: Three blessed somethings, somehow, somewhere, poetically.
I am just going to go full on football for the rest of April, unless I don’t.
