Lemon and gooseberry
I bought one of each
Thinking magnanimity would prevail
Should I ask for the sharper of the two
The greener
The rarer for it’s limited seasonality
The gooseberry
My deserved dessert delight
My treat for buying dinner
That steamy June night

Kindly, when the time arrived
She handed me a teaspoon
Then my chilled dessert
Which, expecting Gooseberry
I accepted in trust
Indeed could taste
Until I asked
‘Is the lemon nice?’
“I don’t know,” she giggled
“you have it.”
Svetlana’s halo had slipped
Again, and again
I the fool

n.b. Moral: Trust nobody when there is only one gooseberry fool in the fridge.
