n.b. The sense in pushing into Russia, rather than sitting like ducks in a bombarded home, is understood. The further from home that the Ukrainian forces push the greater their exposure to risk. It seems that Russia may be more vulnerable to a counter-attack than previously thought, but Russian history shows that the vast expanse of Russia itself is its greatest defence. Ukrainians will be well aware of this, but this offensive has posed serious questions about how draining the attempted invasion of Ukraine has been on the Russian military.

Peace talks are now a remote possibility. Does either side want peace, even when more innocent civilians are dying on both sides of the disputed border?
