deep into the night
the descent of fog
brightens the darkness
distributing street lighting
through millions of airborne droplets
softening the glare
damping down this late hour’s strange sounds
that carry across the broad
over the still woodland
what is that distant commotion
disturbing dreams?
geese? shouts and cries?
distraught dogs?
this kingdom is unsettled
is this the ghost of Kett’s army?
of Lollards fired up
to protest sgain
at the injustice of it all?
has an uprising stirred
the somnambulant populace?
I can hear something is up
if it’s of any import
if it has heft
all will be clear at dawn
when this misty shroud is lifted
when this nightmarish time has passed
~
n.b. Strange sounds abound tonight. No doubt tomorrow’s dawn will re-establish good order.
