531 South Main Street
Pineapple cider and a burger
Come back tomorrow
We don’t close ‘til after two

I had been to the Lorraine Motel
Read the stories
Seen the room
Such injustice when all MLK wanted
Was justice for people of colour too

I left that place tearful angry
At what had gone before
Stumbled into Ernestine + Hazel’s
Needing some food
Came out filled with hope

Ernestine + Hazel’s
Memphis, Tennessee
Wyly Bigger and his band
Rocking the keys like Jerry Lee Lewis
Rocking South Main Street
Until it was time
For my train to leave

Everyone got dancing
While Wily’s band rocked right thru
I had read the stories
Seen the room
I left Memphis on the six o’clock train
Music had straightened out my head again

  1. MLK was an overrated orator IMO

    1. More than an orator, he acted, was imprisoned for standing up to racism, was murdered for advocating change without violence because he was winning the argument. He epitomised all that is good about a democracy. The USA rightly celebrates his contributions with a national holiday.
