Love Sonnet

Photographs of daughters and grand-daughters
Line the hallway, a bright halo of smiles
Surrounds her as she opens the front door

Gingerly she settles down in the chair
With some bags methodically arranged
Printout of her grocery order to hand

Good morning! greets the delivery man

Her husband shuffles into view behind
Anxious, trying to grasp what’s happening
His eyes asking, Who’s this man at our door?

The shopping is here, sweet-heart, come and help
Can you take these things through to the kitchen?

Rheumatic fingers take grip of handles
As he shuffles back into the shadows
