24th August, 1991
Tearing a strip off the Iron Curtain
The Ukraine Soviet Socialist Republic broke away
No one said it would be easy
Kyiv wasn’t built in a day
Out of the maelstrom
The stirring of the pot
The plot and counter-plot
A nation finding its feet
After decades of decay
With grey painted over the cracks
Ukraine turned toward the light pouring through the door
Which remained half-open
Which remained half-shut
Still, with a foot still snagged
Ukraine struggles to shake itself free
From Moscow’s belligerent oligarchy
