the bear went hunting
crossed the river seeking prey
cornered its target
but caught a hind paw in a trap
its been there a while
winter fat thinned
unable to unclasp the steel jaws
rage weakened by hunger
scratching ineffectually
blood seeps into the leaf litter
the scent of pine needles
won't disinfect the wound
the bear's pained roar echoes
unanswered
night gathers round
scavengers eye the sick beast
it cannot be long now
no one dare poke it
confused by its pain
the bear remains dangerous
unwilling to let go of its prey
incapable of retreat
scavengers watch the dying beast
listening for its last breath
