On Sounds

Florence on speakers

Bows across my taut heart-strings

We are not machines

.

n.b. The connections we make with music, with particular songs, or compositions seem to weld places and specific people into the memory.

These tunes do not need to be played very often, the single initial hearing may be all that is needed to seal the emotion of a moment into the heart, a moment that is only unlocked by the reappearance of the tune.

If not deliberately selected when wallowing in nostalgia, the unsuspected hearing of that piece of music can catch us off guard and the past moment floods through to the present, like sunlight through a partially open door on a summer morning.

What the effect of that shaft of light from the past produces depends to a large extent on what emotional state one is enjoying when the memory is evoked.
