Butterfly

My Love
I know you believe in such things
Ghosts, spirits
And what have you
Oh, in a god too? Yeah?
OK, well yes,
Life is too short
And there's so much unknown

As you age
Alright, not you, but I mean me
As I've aged I found out loads
And you know
The biggest thing I've learnt?
The biggest thing is
The more I find out about life, the universe and everything
The more I understand
How little I know
It's like, nothing
I know very little

It was around Easter one time
I was in Italy
Oh, I can't remember exactly,
Some public garden
Oh. I do remember, yes
It was Ravenna
It's on the east
Near the Adriatic coast
Is that important?

Anyway, it was there
A butterfly landed on my hand
I would have been writing poetry, no doubt
Sat at an iron café table in morning sun
Well, this butterfly landed
Sat gently on my hand
Slowly its wings opened
You know how they do
A staccato movement
Then like a full stretch
And it stayed there
Wings wide open

The beauty of that butterfly
was unimaginable
If you can think of the most beautiful wings of all the butterflies around this planet
From the Caribbean
Australia
Even from fusty old England
This beaut combined them all
It was, yeh, like
Well, like the moment in a kaleidoscope
Which, as you twist and turn it
You hit at a special point
In certain light
When you see perfection
It's unsustainable
But you've seen it
You know when you see it

Anyway, whatever
It was as if this beautiful creature
Was part of me
The April light
The Italian spring warmth
While England was still chilly as
Yep, chilly as

For a moment I was perfectly happy
Like blissfully
That butterfly and me
There
Nothing else in the world
Time no longer existed
Nothing else mattered
It felt like that moment lasted for years
For years, yep, for years

Nothing lasts for ever
The butterfly whispered
As it finally flicked its wings
And it melted into the spring air
Where, I don't know
Maybe looking for another hand
A hand warming in sun somewhere else
That's not important

What is important though is that
That's when I knew
There is no god
No tomorrow
No heaven when you're dead

That was the moment
I knew life matters
Being alive matters

There's just, like, Now

Do you get that?
Do you understand
My Love?

You’ve captured it all, Chris, conversation and surrealism, detailed description and some philosophy. I love these lines: ‘Nothing lasts for ever
    The butterfly whispered
As it finally flicked its wings
And it melted into the spring air’.

Hi Kim, It was a strange experience writing this today. It flowed easily. I enjoyed license to use a conversational style, so that helped, undoubtedly. Thank you for commenting again.

I lloved the image of the butterfly resting on the hand and the staccato movement of its wing. That would be a beautiful moment and your description of it says it all.
