Linear B

Poetry and legends we all
know
In songs and stories told around the fire
We tell and adapt them over time
Memory helped by tunes and rhyme
The difficulty that stretches the mind
Is accounting for exchanges at the quay
To track all the bushels of our wheat
How much we've traded and what's left to eat
The only way we can record the sales
Is to make simple marks in damp clay tiles

n.b. NaPoWriMo 2026 Day 14 prompt: Technology. The mystery of what was written in the clay tiles surviving from the Minoan ruins found in Crete, when decoded, was a disappointment to the romantically minded, as administrators and accountants got their first.
